First — did this come on suddenly?

If speech became slurred or difficult suddenly — over minutes or hours rather than weeks — treat it as a medical emergency and call your local emergency number now. Sudden speech change is one of the main signs of a stroke, and treatment works best within the first few hours.

  • Face — has the face drooped on one side?
  • Arms — can both arms be raised and held up?
  • Speech — is speech slurred, or are words coming out wrong?
  • Time — if any of these are new, call for emergency help immediately.
